"We Support You!"

READERS FROM EL PASO AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY RESPOND

I AM A NATIVE EL PASOAN currently living in Boston. I'm grateful for your coverage of local events, and I am especially outraged by recent happenings in Lomas de Poleo. ALL members of the PDNG should be held accountable for the murders and the scare tactics. Please let me know what else I can do to help.

—Ana Lisa Portillo

As a first-generation Mexican-American daughter of farm working parents who grew up in poverty, I fully support the PASO DEL SUR GROUP in their honorable efforts to stop the plan--or at the very least, negotiate with the city for a just resolution involving discussion with actual residents from Segundo Barrio who fairly represent the population living there. I truly believe that only Segundo Barrio knows what is best for Segundo Barrio. There is no real reason why the city's plan should be implemented because it does not benefit the people of El Paso, especially not Segundo Barrio.

—Nicolina Hernandez

Removing people from their homes to build strip malls and stores is just plain immoral and wrong. We shall not go down without a fight. You have my support as a native El Pasoan who still retains his soul.

—Manny Gonzales

Restore America don't Destroy America and build another unneeded big store that doesn't believe in employee benefits and employee rights! Aging in place, in our own neighborhoods and homes should be more important to this city rather than displacing homeowners!

—Sylvia Stuckey

Do not destroy the heart of hundreds of 1st generation Mexican immigrants who made Segundo Barrio their first home in the U.S.

—Norma Mitchell

It is absolutely unethical to kick people out of their homes...the politicians/businessmen responsible for this should be removed from their positions of power and reprimanded for their inhumane actions.

—Maggie Kelly

We are all behind you in this struggle brothers and sisters!

—Daniel Fierro

I live in Atlanta so my mobility is limited right now, but I am there with you in spirit.

—Charles Cruz Dueno

SAVE EL CHUCO!!!

I WAS BORN IN A CLINIC THAT I BELIEVE NO LONGER STANDS RIGHT IN EL SEGUNDO!!

SAVE THE SECOND WARD!!!

—Andres Sanchez

Long live Aztlan!

—Tom Burke

Vamos compañeros! Unidos vamos a lograr la justicia!

—Diana Ovando

I support you and your work and wish you the best, always.

—Denise Chavez

The people from the Segundo Barrio are entitled to a proper remuneration, if not for the value of their homes, that of the land in which the members of Paso Del Norte Group will gain millions of dollars from. Downtown redevelopment will be seen as a crime at the expense of these people.

—Anabel Sepulveda

This is horrible, and I can't stand to see a big-box store eat up another cultural area. We have had enough of "the machine."

—Robin

My mother grew up there!

—Eric Valerio

Los apoyo con lo que hacen. Arriba El Segundo!

—Eric Murillo

Keep up the fight. NO EMINENT DOMAIN! Not now, not ever! The people who bought their land should not pay the price for past political ineptness. I predict that after the next elections, none of the proponents will still be in office. Unfortunately we still need to fend them off until then.

—Nancy Hollebeke

I support the preservation of the historical place where I grew up. It became part of goals and dreams that let my life become who I am and what I am. To destroy this historical place will shatter my inner self as well as my heart. It is a part of me and will be for ever of existing life. Bless this place.

—Joe Moreno

The Segundo Barrio was once the home of my family and many memories are left behind as well as being created everyday in many people's lives. One thing is for sure we will stand together to keep our land and no matter how many machines they bring or how many men come after us we will defend it!!!

—ALMA JIMENEZ

El Segundo Barrio is my home please dont let them destroy it!

—Raul Antonio Velez

Please do what you can to get O'Rourke out of office. And please tell him to stop calling himself Beto. Did the pig forget he's Irish?

—Monica Ortiz

Wal-Mart is a disease for our community and we need to keep it off of these historic grounds!

—Valeria Moreno

Radio La Chusma, has also been banned from La Fe. Untrue reports of Ernesto Tinajero calling Balcorta the Devil are the reason.

—Radio La CHusma

The proposed Wal-Mart and the adjoining strip mall are an arrogant undertaking, to say the least. I find this initiative downright offensive and racist. Taking advantage of any specific ethnic/cultural group because of their perceived powerlessness is simply disgusting.

—Mihai Peteu

I wish you guyz good luck in keeping Segundo Barrio alive! Don't give up & good luck!

—Blanca Rangel

I believe in social justice, equality and fairness in public policy. I do not support the destruction of the historic heart of the Segundo Barrio in El Paso. Hopefully this will make some difference.

—Juan Garza

Viva El Paso! That means every part of it and the culture that makes it great!

—Hector M. Maldonado II

SAVE EL SEGUNDO!

—LORENZO

I'M WITH YOU GUYS ALL THE WAY...

—NORMA

Many like me have moved on to other cities, states, countries, but still have familia en El Segundo. My abuelita and other relatives still live en El Segundo, and my roots still remain there. Every time I return, I always feel at peace when I see my old barrio and I get a tingling feeling all over my body when I see Bear Country, El Chami, the shops downtown, and all beautiful art work the Segundo Barrio's children create on its walls. That tingling feeling of peace, happiness, old memories and friends, good times and bad times, and above all the PRIDE of where I others came from will vanish if Segundo Barrio is no more. If I get that feeling every time I come HOME, I know damn well others returning HOME feel it too. My and others' priceless memories and lives will be affected. For what? ANOTHER Damn Wal-Mart and shops!

“The people are in truth the only legitimate proprietors of the soil and government.” - Thomas Jefferson 1813

Even though I'm 1500 miles away, LOS APOYO! VIVA EL SEGUNDO! VIVA EL CHUCO! There’s no place like home.

—Armando Montelongo

As a product of the barrio I have seen first hand how protecting our culture is of the highest importance. I support any effort to stop the buy out of our history.

—Eduardo Narvaez

They should not take away peoples homes and replace it with a Wal-Mart or mall thas not fair for the people tha live in there because they have been in it for many years and its not fair to just take it from them!!!

—Edgar

I grew up in this neighborhood and still travel to El Paso and go to my old barrio and i would like to continue doing it as well as i would like my children to know where there mother and uncles and grandparents lived . DO NOT LET THEM DESTROY IT!!!!
