WHERE’S THE DIALOGUE: PASO DEL SUR PRESS RELEASE

The lack of desire for true dialogue on the part of the Paso Del Norte
supporters was evidenced last Saturday at the event sponsored by the
Westside Forum where Carmen Felix of the Southside Housing Development Corporation was invited to debate City Rep. Robert O’Rourke.  Supporters of O’Rourke demonstrated a level of intolerance and disrespect that we find unconscionable. O’Rourke supporters booed, heckled, & spoke over Ms. Felix & other opponents of the plan as they tried to make their points.

Statement of the Department of History: University of Texas at El Paso on Plans for Revitalization of Downtown El Paso and Segundo Barrio

The revitalization plan has been framed primarily as one of development and economy, but we feel that the human, cultural, and historical dimensions of the equation deserve greater attention. Historical preservation and economic growth can be mutually viable dimensions of El Paso’s plans for the area only if we have a full discussion of a project that will transform Segundo Barrio, downtown El Paso, and the city as a whole. Letter to Senator Shapleigh

Only by assuming that the barrio is part of downtown can the plan be made to work. Making such an assumption is to raise the edifice on a bed of sand. It continues to be said, and the current issue of Newspaper Tree is a good example, that everyone wants a downtown that is multi-cultural and vibrant. Who can disagree with this?
